Capt. Daniel Henchman 1623-1685

THE CAPTAIN DANIEL HENCHMAN FAMILY

OF BOSTON AND WORCESTER, MA

               1.  CAPTAIN DANIEL HENCHMAN:[1]  was born 4-28-1623 in England and died 10-15-1685 in Worcester, Massachusetts.  He was the son of Richard and Anna Newberry Henchman.  Two “memorials” – Henchman St., Boston and Henchman St., Worcester – are named in Daniel’s honor.

Daniel married[2] (1)  SARAH WOODWARD[3]  3-1-1653.  Sarah was baptized 9-5-1627 in London, England and died about 1670 probably in Worcester, MA.  She was the daughter of Rev. Hezekiah Woodward known as “The Vicar of Bray.”  Hezekiah Woodward’s will named five children – Hannah, Richard, Hezekiah, Nathaniel, and Susanna – of his daughter Sarah to receive L20 apiece and all land in Ireland.   Children: *Hannah; *Richard; *Hezekiah; Nathaniel;  *Susanna;  William

Daniel married[4] (2)  MARY POOLE[5]  2-26-1672 Dorchester, MA.  Mary was born about 1654 and died unknown.  She was the daughter of William Poole of Dorchester, MA.  Children:  WilliamJane*DanielMary.

Principal sources for the Daniel Henchman family are the following: The research of John Henchman of Bend, OR; The Henchman Family; Daniel Henchman, Founder of Worcester provided by John Henchman; and James Savage’s A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England.  Additional sources are William M. Clemen’s American Marriages Before 1699 and Boston Vital Records, 1630-1699 William S. Appleton, ed.

John Henchman:  “Here is a summary of what we know about Daniel from reliable documents.:  He was born in England 28 April 1623.  His father was Richard Henchman [and in some church records his last name is spelled alternatively as Hinkesman and Hinckeman, probably Latinized versions or misspellings].  He married Anna [or Hannah] Newberry on 29 June 1622 at St. Peter’s Church, Paul’s Wharf, London.  They had five children — Daniel, b 28 Apr 1623; John, b 17 Apr 1626; Stephen, b 15 May, 1634; Hannah, b 16 Oct 1635; and Ann, b Nov 1640.  All were baptized in St. Martin of the Fields, London, except for Ann who was baptized at St. James Garlickhthe, London.  It is important to note that these church records, of which we have copies, do not show any records for Daniel’s grandparents or other ancestors.  This is not unusual as very few church records [and no civil records] were maintained before the early 1600s except for citizens of some importance”

The Henchman Family, published in England in 1868, provides information establishing the Henchman family in England and the Daniel Henchman family in Worcester, Massachusetts.  Although the connection of Daniel Henchman to the Crosborough – Henchman family is not made, an eight generation chart lists Daniel’s descendants

According to The Worcester Historical Society’s article Daniel Henchman, The Founder of Worcester, Daniel’s roots could be traced to the Northamptonshire area in England.  It is suggested that Daniel was the son of a brother of Joanna Henchman Hoar who settled in Plymouth Colony before 1653.  Joanna had brothers – Thomas, Walter, William and Edward (Edmond).  Daniel was probably a brother or cousin to Capt. Thomas Henchman of Chelmsford who was the son of Edmond who settled in Plymouth County in 1653 near Joanna Henchman Hoar. Daniel sold property in Boston to Capt. Thomas Henchman for his sister Margaret who married Charles Hopkins.  This lot adjoined that of Daniel’s home.

The establishment of Worcester is detailed in Daniel Henchman, The Founder of Worcester.  In 1668 the General Court approved the appointment of Daniel Henchman; Capt. Daniel Gookin; Capt. Thomas Prentice; and Lt. Richard Beers to “to lay out a town, etc.” in the area that became Worcester, Massachusetts.  Daniel claimed twenty-five acres south of the present Lincoln St. which was known as the “Henchman Farm.”  On 6-24-1675, Daniel was appointed by the General Court as “Captain of a Hundred men for the service of this Colony” especially in King Philip’s War.  In 1683, after several disruptions (especially King Philip’s War) Daniel Henchman “sets out … with his pack Horses in order to settling a Plantation…”.  A year later Gookin; Henchman; and Prentice applied to the Middlesex Court for an order requiring all inhabitants of Worcester “to meet together on the Lord’s Day to worship God.”

James Savage in A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England writes: “Daniel, Boston, sch.master 1666, freem. 1672, ar. co. 1675 perhaps, by w. Sarah had (beside Richard, Hezekiah, and Nathaniel) Susanna, b. 7 June 1667; and William, 28 July 1669, wh. d. young; and by w. Mary, d. of William Poole, m. 26 Apr. 1672, had William, again, 29 Mar. 1673; Jane, 25 May 1674; Daniel, 16 June 1677; and Mary, 1 June 1682; the last two prob. d. young.  Having serv. on the Comtee. for survey of a new planta. now Worcester, a. 1665, he bec. a propr. and in Philip’s war, 1675 and 6, was a capt. of district. and d. at Worcester, 15 Oct. 1685.  His wid. Mary, with the s. Richard and Hezekiah had admin.  The est. by inv. of 29 Apr. 1686, was L1381.13.9.”

Daniel died 10-15-1685.  Sewall wrote in his diary:  “Very few at his funeral, his own servants, a white and a black put him in his grave.  His wife and children following and no more or but one or two more.”[6]

A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England:  “Hezekiah, His s. Daniel was lieut. col., deacon of the O. S. ch. the enterpris. bookseller, who caused the first ed. in America of the Eng. bible to be print … with a false title-page to evade the right of the King’s printer; d 25 Feb. 1761.”

Daniel Henchman was involved in community affairs, as well as, business activities.  His community service included the following:  Justice of the Peace; overseer of the poor; and lieutenant-colonel of the militia.  Daniel had substantial interests in several ships; he established a paper mill; and was involved in foreign trade.  He was a Deacon in the Old South Church in Boston and made generous gifts – 100 ounces of silver and L250 – to Harvard University.  His portrait by John Singleton hung in the Concord Art Center.

Daniel was chiefly known as a wealthy publisher and book seller in Boston. According to William T. Baxter’s Daniel Henchman, A Colonial Bookseller,  Daniel printed an unauthorized copy of the Bible.  “Only the holders of royal patents were allowed to print this book, so to avoid prosecution Henchman … imported special paper and type from London and then, in 1749, prepared an exact copy.”

According to Bernard Bailyn’s The New England Merchants, Daniel’s son-in-law Thomas Hancock was “the ambitious son of a penniless Puritan minister of Lexington, Massachusetts.” Frederick Wagner in Patriot’s Choice writes, “Once Thomas had allied himself with Lydia (and, incidentally, with the Henchman money), his rise was swift.”  Thomas and Lydia had no children, but adopted his nephew John Hancock – who became the first signer of the Declaration of Independence.

William Baxter’s Daniel Henchman, A Colonial Bookseller relates the following:

“By his will he left to his wife an annuity of L200 Lawful Money, the furniture and negroes in his house, and the use of the house; to his brother Samuel, free Diet Washing Lodging and Living; to John Wharton and Nicholas Bowes L50 Lawful Money apiece; and to Thomas and Lydia Hancock, practically everything else.”

“Thomas Hancock died shortly after Henchman, and in this way most of the latter’s estate passed into the hands of Governor John Hancock, and may ultimately have been spent in furthering the American cause during the Revolution.”

History of Lynn, Essex County, MA: “The Rev. Nathaniel Henchman was a son of Mr. Nathaniel Henchman, a bookbinder, and deacon of a church, in Boston.  He was born on the 22d of November, 1700. … He graduated at Harvard University, in 1717, and was ordained minister of the first parish of Lynn, in December, 1720.  …  Mr. Henchman died on the twenty-third day of December, 1761, aged 61, having preached forty-one years.  In the early part of his ministry, he enjoyed the esteem and confidence of his

people.  His learning was extensive, and his integrity and virtue entitled him to high respect.  He was strongly attached to regularity and order, and disinclined to every species of enthusiasm.  He thought the services of the Sabbath, in general, were sufficient, and was decidedly opposed to evening meetings.  By his omitting to deliver lectures, and refusing to admit itinerant preachers into his pulpit, disaffections were created, which deprived him of the regard of many of his people.”
