Dr. John Hinchman 1744-1796

THE DR. JOHN HINCHMAN FAMILY

OF SUSSEX CO., NEW JERSEY

            5.  DR. JOHN HINCHMAN:  was born about 1744 probably in Flushing, Long Island, New York and died about 1796 Sussex Co., New Jersey.  He was the son of Dr. Joseph and Mary Bloodgood Hinchman. During the Revolutionary War, Dr. Hinchman served as surgeon in the Sussex County Militia.  Dr. John bur Hinchman Family Burial Ground, Vernon, Sussex, NJ.

John married ABIGAIL BARTON about 1771. She married (2) 8-18-1796 Newton, Sussex, NJ, Thomas Blaine. Abigail was the daughter of Joseph and Anna Lane Barton who married 3-4-1745.  Joseph Barton served as Lt. Col. in the British Army.

The New Jersey Herald:[1] “He [Joseph Barton] was captured and eventually traded for another prisoner. Following the war, he emigrated to Canada where he died in February 1788. … As a result of Joseph Barton’s activities with the British army, his properties … were confiscated and sold … The Vernon tract was purchased by his son-in-law Dr. John Hinchman who was owner of adjacent lands.”

The New Jersey Herald:[2]  Dr. Hinchman’s patriot service is written as follows:  “One early settler who served in the war was Dr. John Hinchman of Vernon who served in the Sussex County Militia as a medical doctor.  … Dr. Hinchman’s house at Vernon had 37 rooms in it.  His wife and servants killed 13 bullocks and 60 sheep in one night to feed Washington and his army.  They stayed over night there and had breakfast there.”  Sweetman continues, “Dr. Hinchman died intestate in Vernon in 1789.  At the time of his death he owned 500 acres of property in Vernon Township on the road leading to Goshen, and an additional 100 acres of land in Frankford Township.  His widow, Abigail Hinchman, had been appointed administratrix of the estate.”

Vernon 200 – A Bicentennial History of the Township of Vernon, NJ:[3] “John Hinchman’s Tavern was presumably located in his house near the intersection of Route 94 and Maple Grange Road, a good spot for a tavern.  This dwelling supposedly hosted George Washington and his troops during the Revolution.  Hinchman was licensed to keep tavern for 1774-75, then again from 1785 intermittently through 1795.  The gap from 1775 through 1785 corresponds roughly to the war years, when Hinchman served as a surgeon in the Army.”  The author writes about  Vernon Township cemeteries including Hinchman Cemetery and Hinchman Slave Cemetery near the tavern intersection.

The American Genealogist:[4] On 3-30-1796, administration of Dr. John Hinchman’s estate was granted to Abigail Hinchman, Joseph Hinchman, and Richard Edsall, Jr. all of Vernon and the property divided among their eleven children – John; James; Ann Hathorn; Oliver; Mary Owens; Joseph; William; Robert; Catherine; Abigail; Sarah.  The thirty-seven-room mansion became the property of a family named Rutherford.  The estate was later known as the “Burnt House Hill” because the mansion burned while owned by the Rutherfords.

THE JAMES HINCHMAN FAMILY

OF PASSAIC CO., NJ

6.  JAMES HINCHMAN:  was born 7-17-1789 Vernon, Sussex Co., New Jersey and died 12-13-1866, 77-4-26, Preakness, Passaic Co., NJ.  He was the son of Dr. John and Abigail Barton Hinchman.  James and Susannah are buried in the Hinchman Burying Ground, Wayne, Passaic Co., NJ.  James married (2) 11-3-1852 Eliza Babcock (b ca 1810 NJ)

James married (1) ca 1808  SUSANNAH SIMONSON.  Susannah was born 4-11-1790 Vernon, NJ and died 11-14-1850 Preakness, Passaic Co.,  NJ, 60-7-3.  She was the daughter of Simon and Susan Perry Simonson.  Her father, a Revolutionary War veteran, Capt. Simon Simonson owned a tavern on route 94 north of McAfee in 1790.[11]

Preakness and Preakness Reformed Church:[12]  “James Hinchman, the first of the name in Preakness, came here in 1825, from the town of Vernon, in Sussex County, NJ … James Hinchman was the son of John S. Hinchman, MD of Vernon, and before coming to Preakness had been a school teacher. His wife’s name was Susannah Simonson.

“He was the father of fifteen children, six boys and nine girls, most of whom were born in Preakness.  John S. Hinchman, of Preakness, the oldest son, was the only one of the Hinchman boys who made their home here any length of time after their marriage.  The names of the boys in this family were, in their order, John S.; William; Joseph; James; Charles; and Henry.  James, Jr., lived for a time in the log house on the hill west of the homestead.  Charles went to Australia and was never heard from but once afterwards, which was very soon after he left home.  Henry was drowned June 28, 1847, at the age of twenty, in the Shrewsbury River, Monmouth County, while in bathing.  … James Hinchman, Sr., with several of his family, is buried in the Hinchman family burying ground, across the road from the front of the Preakness Church.  The daughters of this man were: Margaret, m John Stevenson; Kate m George Voorhees; Ann m James McBride; Susanna m William Fleming; Mary W. m John Crompton; Hattie m John Greaves; Pearline m … Johnson; Emeline, d young; Carrie m Charles Fairweather.
