Edmund Hinchman 1607-1668
THE EDMUND HINCHMAN FAMILY
EDMUND HINCHMAN: was born about 1607 in England and died[1] 10-27-1668 in Chelmsford, Middlesex Co., MA. His named has been spelled many different ways – Edmund; Edmond; Edward, Henchman; Hinchman; and Hincksman.
Edmund married ELIZABETH … about 1628 in England. Elizabeth was born about 1605 in England and died about 1674 probably in Chelmsford, MA. Elizabeth married[2] (2) 8-1-1672 in Chelmsford, MA, (2) Rev. John Fiske.
Numerous Hinchman family members in New Jersey, New York, Michigan, California and other states trace their ancestry back to Edmund Hinchman. It is a difficult task to locate information in publications [collections, as well as vital statistics] on the Internet, from family members, etc. and determine who’s who in the Colonial era.
Several sources [not primary evidence] for Hinchmans in the Colonial period are James Savage, A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England; The Henchman Family; Frederic G. Mather, Refugees of 1776 from Long Island to Connecticut; Vital Records of Chelmsford; and Daniel Henchman, The Founder of Worcester. Two additional sources are family members – Richard M. Hinchman of Groton, MA who researched the family, as well as, his grandmother Lydia S. Mitchell Hinchman author of Biographical Sketch of Charles S. Hinchman. Other family members – Rev. Philip Evaul and Charlotte Hinchman Oselador – contributed information for The Hinchman Family in America.
A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, is considered “the authority” for genealogical information of early American families. He writes as follows: “Edmund, Marshfield 1652, had come with, or after, Rev. John Fiske of Wenham, … Chelmsford after 1657, there died 27 Oct. 1668; perhaps had d. Eliz. who. m. 1652, George Vaughan of Scituate. His wid. Eliz. m. 1 Aug. 1672, Rev. John Fiske.” [Vol. II, P-402].
The Henchman Family provides separate genealogies for Thomas Crosborough Henchman of Northamptonshire, England and the descendants of Captain Daniel Henchman of Boston and Worcester. However, no direct reference is made to Edmund Hinchman of Marshfield and Chelmsford, Massachusetts Bay.
The Refugees of 1776 from Long Island to Connecticut: Edward of Chelmsford was the son of Edward, the son of Thomas and Ann Griffith Hinchman. “Edward I and Thomas I, sons of Edward, came to Boston, Mass., in 1637, with Rev. John Fiske, of Chelmsford. Edward I was at Charlestown, Mass., in 1637, with wife Elizabeth and sons, Daniel 2, Thomas 2 and John 2. He was at Marshfield, in 1652; and at Chelmsford – both in Mass. – in 1657. b 1600, d 1668. His Wid. m. in 1672, Rev. John Fiske.” Mather’s sources were The Henchman Family and Mortimer L. Hinchman a grandson of George W. Hinchman and descendant of Edmund.
Daniel Henchman, The Founder of Worcester: Capt. Daniel was “a close relative, probably brother or cousin, of the equally important Capt. Thomas Henchman of Chelmsford. … Thomas was the son of Edmond who settled as early as 1653 in Plymouth County, near the place where Joanna Henchman Hoar had already made her home with her five children. We know she had brothers: Thomas, Walter, William, and Edward. Could Edward have been a mistaken reading for Edmond?” The writer continues, “William Henchman also lived for a while in Boston but for most of his life in Marshfield – probably a son of Edmond, but possibly a brother. When in 1653, Daniel Hoar, Joanna Henchman’s son, had occasion to give a power-of-attorney to his brother John, Edmond Henchman, who was living at that time in Marshfield, was visiting in Boston and signs as witness.” Daniel Henchman sold real-estate to “his unplaced relative, Capt. Thomas Henchman of Chelmsford, where the latter’s sister Margaret lived the rest of her life, with her husband, Charles Hopkins, her four daughters, and her son. This lot adjoined that which [Daniel] Henchman chose for his own home, a fact which strengthens the probability that Margaret was also a near relative of his own.”
Richard M. Hinchman’s research leads to Edmond and Elizabeth Hincksman living (a) at Martley, Worcestershire, England 1628-1640 (where their children were baptized at St. Peter Parish); (b) Marshfield, New Plymouth 1651-1659; and (c) Chelmsford, MA 1660-1668. The Hincksman children – born at Martley – according to Richard’s research are William, bap 11-23-1628; Edmund Hinxman, bap 9-19-1630; Thomas, bap 9-23-1632; Elizabeth, bap 7-13-1634; John, bap 9-13-1636; Richard Hinxman, bap 4-21-1638, bur 2-25-1638-39; Mary Hinxman, bap 1-30-1639/40, bur 2-2-1639-40; and three daughters – Bridget; Margaret; Hannah – probably born in Massachusetts.
St. Peter Parish, Martley, Worcestershire, England:[3] Children of Edmund and Elizabeth Hinxman: William bap 11-23-1627/28; Edmund bap 9-19-1630/31; Thomas bap 9-23-1632/3; Elizabeth bap 7-13-1634/5; John bap 9-13-1635/6; Richard bap 4-26-1637/8; Ann bur 2-25-1638/9; Mary bap 1-30-1639/40, bur Feb. 2nd.
Richard’s grandmother Mrs. Lydia S. Mitchell Hinchman of Philadelphia, indicates that Edmond is Edward Henchman, son of Thomas and Ann Griffith Henchman of London, England and nephew of the famous Bishop Humphrey Henchman. She writes in Biographical Sketch of Charles S. Hinchman the following: “In the same generation (as the Bishop) we find Edward Henchman or “Edmond”. He it was who came to Massachusetts and whom we find in Charlestown and Salem 1637; in Marshfield 1652; at Chelmsford 1657.” She continues, “His children were: Captain Daniel; Thomas; William; Elizabeth; Major John; Bridget; Hannah; and Margaret.”
Frederick Mather and Lydia Hinchman both refer to The Henchman Family. Thomas Henchman a descendant of Thomas Crosborough Henchman had two sons – Edward and Thomas. Edward, a merchant in London in 1633, married a daughter of John Platt, son of Sir Hugh Platt. The International Genealogical Index (IGI) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints shows the birth of Henchmans named Edward and Thomas – Edward born 2-9-1628 St. Nicholas Acons, London and Thomas born 2-14-1629 St. Andrew by Wardrobe, London – who may or not be the sons of Edward the London merchant.

Children:[4] William*; Edmund; Thomas; Elizabeth; Major John*; Bridget; Hannah; and Margaret.
2. MAJOR THOMAS HINCKSMAN:[5] prob s/o Edmund and Elizabeth Hinchman was born about 1629 in England and died 7-18-1703 in Chelmsford, Mass, 74 yrs. He married Elizabeth Merriam (d 10-17-1704 Chelmsford).
Savage writes, “Thomas, Concord, early to sett. at Chelmsford, freem. 1654, had Bridget, who m. 28 Nov. 1660, James Richardson, and perhaps other ch. was rep. 1667, 71, and 6, major of the reg. of Middlesex, and d. 18 July 1703.” According to Daniel Henchman – The Founder of Worcester, Thomas was “the son of Edmond who settled as early as 1653 in Plymouth County, near the place where Joanna Henchman Hoar had already made her home.” A History of the Town of Dunstable, by Elias Nason states, “The exclusive right of trading with the Indians on the Merrimack River was sold to … Thomas Henchman (of Chelmsford) [and others] … on the first day of July, 1657, and we may well suppose that actual settlements were made soon afterwards.”
According to The Richardson Memorial, Major Thomas Henchman, Josiah Richardson, and William Fletcher, erected in 1669, the second saw-mill built in Chelmsford. In 1686, land was sold by the Indians to Thomas Henchman, of Chelmsford and Jonathan Tyng, of Dunstable. A few months later they conveyed this land to forty-four citizens of Chelmsford after reserving each of them a share to himself. In May 1676 “an additional force was stationed in the fort [at Pawtucket Falls] commanded by his [Richardson’s] wife’s brother, Capt Thomas Henchman. In the spring of 1677, “Lieut. Richardson was killed [in a battle with the Indians]. James Richardson thus dying intestate, his wife’s brother, Capt. Thomas Henchman, was appointed administrator.
2. EDMUND HINXMAN:[6] prob s/o Edmund and Elizabeth Hinchman was born about 1630 in England and died about 1678 in ?Jamaica. He was a Quaker and master of a ship. John Clement writes: “Edward Hinchman was a resident of Maryland in 1658 and (as a Quaker) was fined for refusing to bear arms.” Richard Hinchman’s research shows that the names Edmond Hinshman and Edward Hinchman appear in Maryland court records in 1657 and 1664 [200 a on the Patuxent River] and Barbados records in 1672 and 1678. Edmond’s will dated 10-15-1678 in Port Royal, Jamaica does not mention a wife or children.
2. ELIZABETH HINCKSMAN:[7] prob d/o Edmund and Elizabeth Hinchman was born about 1634 in England and died 6-24-1693 Middlesborough, Plymouth Co., Mass. Bay. She married in 1652 in Marshfield, MA, George Vaughn of Scituate (b ca 1620, d 10-20-1694). Res: Marshfield 1653-57, 1663; Middleborough, 1669. Savage writes, “Edmund .. perhaps had d. Eliz. wh. m. 1652, George Vaughn of Scituate.” and “George [Vaughan], Scituate, m. 1652, Eliz. Henchman or Hincksman, perhaps d. of Edmund of Marshfield, had Eliz; Daniel; John, b 1658; Mary, m Jonathan Washburn; and Joseph.” Virkus writes, “Geo. Vaughan, m Elizabeth, dau Edmund Hinckman.”
2. BRIDGET HENCHMAN:[8] prob d/o Edmund and Elizabeth Hinchman [possibly Major Thomas Hinchman] was born about 1640. She married (1) 11-28-1660 James Richardson[9] of Woburn and Chelmsford. Richardson children: Thomas, 10-26-1660; James, 10-26-1661; and others. Bridget married (2) 10-8-1679 William Chandler[10] of Andover (b England, freeman 1669). Chandler children: Phebe, b 9-17-1680; Joseph, 7-17-1682; Rhoda, 9-26-1684.
2. HANNAH HINCKSMAN:[11] prob d/o Edmund and Elizabeth Hinchman was born about 1640 and died 2-25-1720/21 Boston, Mass. She and James Hill were married 4-10-1662 in Boston, Mass by “Captaine Daniell Gookine of Cambridge.” James Hill (b ca 1638, 2-26-1720/21) was a freeman in 1671. Hannah and her husband James Hill died one day apart and were both buried the same day on 3-2-1720/21 in the South Burying Place, Boston with twelve bearers and a “Great Funeral.” Children: Hannah, 3-21-1665; James, 2-21-1667; Ignatius, 11-6-1668; Elizabeth, 6-15-1670
2. MARGARET HINCKSMAN:[12] prob d/o Edmund and Elizabeth Hinchman was born about 1640. She married about 1662 Charles Hopkins (b ca 1648, d 7-25-1691 gun shot). According to Daniel Henchman – Founder of Worcester, Margaret was the sister of Capt. Thomas Henchman of Chelmsford [therefore daughter of Edmond] and mother of four daughters and one son. The following information is from James H. Stark’s The Loyalists of Massachusetts: Capt. John Goldthwaite and his wife Sarah Hopkins lived in the home given to Sarah and her sisters by their uncle Major Thomas Henchman. Sarah Hopkins and John Goldthwaite were married 3-13-1701 Boston by the Rev. Cotton Mather. Sarah died 10-31-1715 age thirty-five and is buried in Copp’s Hill Cemetery.
2. WILLIAM HINCKSMAN:[13] prob s/o Edmund and Elizabeth Hinchman was born about 1628 in ?England. William married Mary Philberd in Boston, Mass. on 12-20-1652 [Clemens] or 11-20-1652 [Appleton]. Savage writes, “William, Boston, m. 20 Jan. 1653, Mary Philbird … had William, b. 29 Jan. 1654; and Mary, 20 Dec. 1655.” Stratton writes in Plymouth Colony that on October 29, 1669, William Hincksman and others were charged with not paying their rates for the ministry. Savage writes: “Joseph, Scituate, ca 1680, had Eliz. 1685; Mary 1689; Thomas 1691; Deborah 1692; Joseph 1694; William 1696; Hannah 1698; Edmund 1700; Sarah 1702.” According to Samuel Deane’s The History of Scituate, “Joseph Henchman, (or Hinckesman) appears in Scituate 1680. He owned a considerable tract of land at Henchman’s corner, half mile west of the south Meeting house … He also had a sister Elnathan, who married Eliab Turner 1694. This family came from Massachusetts and returned thither; probably to Chelmsford. We take him to have been the son of Thomas Hinchman, Esq. of Chelmsford. There was, however, a Mr. Hinckesman in Marshfield, 1653, who may have been his father.” Savage writes: “Joseph, Scituate, a 1660” and names nine children.

THE MAJOR JOHN HINCHMAN FAMILY
2. MAJOR JOHN HINCKSMAN: John was born about 1636 in England and died about 1688 Flushing, Queens Co., Long Island, New York. John was probably a son of Edmund and Elizabeth … Hincksman Hinchman.
John married (1) ELIZABETH EMMONS[17] 8-10-1660 Boston, Massachusetts. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas and Martha Emmons. Children: John; Robert. Wills[18] of Thomas and Martha Emmons probated in Boston, MA – Thomas’ will proved 6-17-1664 names daughter “Elizabeth Hincksman” and Martha’s will dated 3-30-1666 does not, but the codicil dated 10-1-1666 does mention her “sone Hincksman.”
John married (2) SARAH … about 1669. Sarah married (2) 7-2-1696 New York, James Clement.[19] The will[20] of Sarah [Hinchman] Clement, widow of Flushing, Queens Co., NY, dated 6-15-1725 and proved 9-8-1727 named beneficiaries as Elizabeth Doughty; Thomas Hinchman; Hannah Thorn; Mary Willett; Joseph Hinchman; Margaret Clement; and Bridget Thorn. She named her son Thomas and two sons-in-law John Clement and Benjamin Thorn as executors. Her daughter Sarah may have been deceased at the time of the will.
Sources for Major John Hinchman include the following: James Savage, A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England; Frederic G. Mather, The Refugees of 1776; and John Clement, The First Emigrant Settlers of Newton Twp, Old Gloucester Co., West New Jersey. Family members – Rev. Philip Evaul; Richard M. Hinchman; and Charlotte Hinchman Oselador – researched the New England Hinchmans extensively.
A Genealogical Dictionary: “John, Boston, m. 10 Aug. 1660, Eliz. d. of Thomas Emmons. John, Charlestown, perhaps same as Hinckson.” [page 402] and “John, Charlestown, by w. Mary had John, b 5 Feb. 1683, bapt. with br. Robert, 17 July, 1687; and Mary, 30 July, bapt. 5 Aug. 1688.” [page 426]. [Was this the same John Hinchman?]
The Refugees of 1776: ”Maj. John 2 came to Oyster Bay, L.I., about 1657; m (1) in 1660 Elizabeth Emmons; m (2) Sarah …; d at Flushing, L.I. in 1688, where he was a patentee, 1666-1688. He was Commandant at Ft. Merrimac, Maine Dist., in 1687-8. His son Thomas 3 was of Flushing, L.I. Dr. Joseph 4, of Flushing, son of Thomas 3, m. Mary Bloodgood. (MLH).” Mather’s source (MLH) was Mortimer L. Hinchman.
The First Emigrant Settlers: “In the year 1675, a valuation of the estates of persons resident in Flushing, Long Island, made known that John Hinchman was an inhabitant, and the owner of one negro; twenty-five acres of land; two horses; four oxen; four cows; two colts; four hogs and forty sheep. … In the year 1698, another list [included] the names of John Hinchman and Sarah his wife, and of their children, John, James, Mercy, Mary and Sarah, as well as that of one negro slave called Hector … belonging to the said John Hinchman; also the names of Thomas Hinchman and Miriam his wife, and two children, Thomas and Sarah. Among the names composing the list of freemen, is that of Robert Hinchman.” John, Robert, and Thomas are most likely sons of Major John Hinchman, as well as John’s brother Joseph named by John Clement.
According to Philip Evaul’s research, Major John Hinchman’s military service involved a 1663 British Expedition from Boston against the Dutch in New York. A deed dated 3-19-1685 transferred to his sons the following: Thomas, sixteen meadow acres; and Joseph, five acres “ye-Eagel’s Nest Poynt” and two acres “salt med adjoining to it.”
Richard M. Hinchman’s research shows that in 1659, John sold land at Oyster Bay; in 1674, he was a Constable of Flushing; and in 1675, he was issued a grant for eighty acres on the south side of Staten Island. In 1680, John was commissioned a Lieutenant of a foot company in the Flushing militia under Capt. William Lawrence. John Hinchman was one of nine citizens to execute deed dated 4-14-1684 transferring land from eight Indian chiefs to the settlers of Flushing. On 1-1-1685/86, John and wife Sarah deeded 50 acres to son Robert.
