“Wilford … (was) nicknamed “Cotton” because of his white hair when he was a young boy.  Cotton often spoke of his mother, hard times, and working with brothers and friends at Miller & Todd Coal Mines, Ritchwood Mines, and Badger Coal.  He told stories of how they hand dug coal, loaded the buggies, which were pulled in and out of the mines by mules and ponies which sometimes got their ears tangled in the overhead wires and the havoc that would break loose.

“Sometimes, he talked of time spent on the Aleutian Islands during World War II., of volunteering out of the paratroopers to learn Morse Code and eventually stretching phone lines behind enemy lines in Italy.  He talked sadly of a close friend shot and killed beside him from sniper fire.  He told of the sea sickness everybody experienced on the boat trip to North Africa and the rough campaigns which followed.

“Often, with a bit of a grin, he told of his marriage to Marie Ware and how she ran the car over the bank trying to drive at their home in Millertown.  He also talked about Pepper Ware, his sons, and an old horse named Silver who dumped Pepper in a hornets nest and promptly ran two and half miles down the road tearing up the hay-rake and his best set of harness.

“What he most like to talk about were his children, of whom he was very proud and teaching them love of God, family togetherness, friendship, and pride in the flag and country.     (William G. Hinchman,  Buckhannan, WV).
