Robert Hinchman 1663 – 1709 NY
THE ROBERT HINCHMAN FAMILY
OF LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK
3. ROBERT HINCHMAN: was born about 1663 Flushing, Queens Co., Long Island, New York and died about 1709 in Flushing, NY. He was probably a son of Major John and Elizabeth Emmons Hinchman. Robert Hinchman’s will – dated 6-21-1706, proved 5-19-1709 – was recorded Queens Co., NY.[1]
Robert married about 1700 to ABIGAIL … They had two sons – Benjamin, born 1-24-1702 and Robert born 3-15-1708 and possibly one daughter Sarah who married James Clement [Gene Pool, www.ancestry.com].
According to John Clement’s First Emigrant Settlers in Newton Township, John and Sarah Hinchman; Thomas and Miriam Hinchman; and Robert Hinchman, freeman were residents of Flushing, Long Island in 1698. Several members of the Robert Hinchman family – Benjamin, Benjamin, Jr., and Robert – witnessed numerous wills as shown in Abstracts of New York City Wills.
The major source of information for Robert Hinchman’s family is descendant Nelson Hinchman of Pottstown, PA. In 1931, Nelson collected a fourteen-generation family history beginning with Thomas Crosborough of Northamptonshire, England. This collection was shared by Charlotte Hinchman Oselador.
4. BENJAMIN HINCHMAN: was born 1-24-1702 ?Flushing, New York and died 3-10-1771, 68 years, Jamaica, Queens Co., New York. He was the son of Robert and Abigail Hinchman of Flushing, NY.
Benjamin married about 1731 to MARY BROWN. Mary was born 11-12-1714 and died 1751, 37 yrs. Benjamin witnessed many New York City wills between 1733 and 1767.
Will of Benjamin Hinchman:[2] dated 7-11-1767, proved 4-8-1771, printed in part. “In the name of God, Amen. I, Benjamin Hinchman, of Jamaica, in Queens County, yeoman, being in Good health. All my just debts (which are few) and funeral charges to be paid out of my personal estate” Children – Sophia; Mary; Elizabeth; Robert; Benjamin; James; and Letitia. “… I leave to Elias Bayles, Nicholas Smith, and others, who are the present Elders and Deacons of the Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, oe16 to be kept at interest for ever and the interest paid to Rev. William Mills, the present minister, and to his successors to support a Standing Ministry through all succeeding ages.” Benjamin willed various amounts and personal items to his children. He left his son Robert various items including “spirituous liquors” and surveying instruments and load stone and all his books of law. His books of divinity and history were given to all his children. “I make my son Robert and my friends, William Furman and Deacon Nicholas Smith, executors.” Wit: John Thurston, blacksmith, Elias Bayles, Jr, William Cebra.
According to Nelson Hinchman, in 1753 the General Assembly met in Benjamin’s home. In 1761, Benjamin was one of twelve communicants in the First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica. Eight Hinchman children were baptized in this church. The following family members are buried in the Hinchman Plot, Prospect Cemetery, Jamaica, NY: Benjamin; his wife Mary; and children – John; Benjamin; Cornelius; Letitia Lamberson; Elizabeth Roberts; Mary Purdy; and son-in-law Steven Purdy.

Will of Robert Hinchman:[4] dated 1-26-1784, proved 2-26-1784. “In the name of God, Amen. I, Robert Hinchman, of the Township of Jamaica, Queens County, being sick and weak in body. I leave to my dearly beloved wife Johanna, all my estate, while my widow. Unto my children, Nehemiah; Polly; John; Daniel; Robert; and Benjamin, my whole estate in equal shares; notwithstanding the above, the seven acres of land that I have lying between the lands of the Revd Abm. Kettletas and Mr. Samuel Jones, be disposed of soon after my decease. I make my cousin, Robert Furman, David Lambertson, my son Nehemiah and my wife Johanna, executors. Wit: James Cebra, of said County, storekeeper; Joseph Robinson, Daniel Menema.
According to Abstract of (New York) Wills, Robert was a scrivener (official recorder). He and family members witnessed many wills in New York. Robert is recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution for his public service – DAR Patriot Index, p 331.
Nelson Hinchman:[5] According to his research, much is known about Robert’s activities. On 4-11-1774, a long case in Chancery between Mr. Bloomer, Rector of Grace Church, Jamaica and Hinchman and Edsall, Church Wardens was decided by Governor Tryon in favor of Mr. Bloomer. Mrs. Tryon gave the cost of L80 to the losing party. On 6-21-1776, Robert was a witness against “fourteen disaffected persons” (Tories) at Jamaica. On 8-28-1776 after the Battle of Long Island, General Woodhull was captured in the back yard of Robert Hinchman’s house in Jamaica. The British arrested various “obnoxious and notorious whigs” including Robert and his brother-in-law David Lamberson. Robert was sent to a prison ship, and later released. [How long is not known]. On 9-1-1777, donations from Hinchmans for the New Corps included the following: eight shillings from Obadiah; eight from John; and sixteen from Robert. On 12-15-1783 Robert Hinchman was appointed to take charge of the public records of Queens County.
Robert’s widow Joanna Hinchman carried on the business of the Hinchman Tavern. On 3-1-1791, a committee met in the Tavern regarding the building of an academy. On 5-1-1792, subscribers for the Union Hall Academy included L4 from John Hinchman and L20 from Joanna. In 1791 and 1792, the tavern was the scene of many elaborate functions. The 1791 Fourth of July Celebration started at the tavern at 7 a.m. “After a parade, elocution, and fireworks, there was a large and sumptuous banquet in the large room of the tavern.” The births of seven children – Mary, Nehemiah, Mary, Daniel, Benjamin, Robert, and Benjamin were recorded in the church records.
