Thomas Hinchman 1675 – 1744 NY

THE THOMAS HINCHMAN FAMILY

OF LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK

            3.  THOMAS HINCHMAN:  was born about 1674 Flushing, Queens Co., Long Island, New York and died before 6-15-1747 Flushing, New York.  He was probably a son of Major John and Sarah … Hinchman.

Thomas married  MIRIAM … about 1695.  Miriam was born about 1678 and died sometime after her son Obadiah’s will dated 9-12-1753.

Two sources of information about Thomas Hinchman are Frederic G. Mather’s Refugees of 1776 and John Clement’s First Emigrant Settlers in Newton Township.  Mather writes that Major John Hinchman’s son “Thomas 3 was of Flushing, L.I.” and that Thomas’s son Dr. Joseph married Mary Bloodgood. Clement writes that Thomas Hinchman, his wife Miriam, and two children Thomas and Sarah were included in the 1698 tax list of Flushing, as well as Robert Hinchman, freeman. Rev. Philip Evaul and Charlotte Hinchman Oselandor contributed information about this family.

Will of Thomas Hinchman:[1] dated 11-3-1733, proved 6-15-1747.  “In the name of God, Amen.  I, Thomas Hinchman, of Flushing in Queens County, yeoman, November 3, 1733, being in good health.  My body to be buried at the discretion of my executors, whensoever it shall please my creator to cut the thread of this life.  I leave to my wife Miriam, the use of house, farm and Plantation situate in Flushing, and all my meadows, salt and fresh, so long as she remains my widow; Also the use of plate and all the rest of my movables, and after her marriage to my children as she shall see fit, except my wearing apparel, which is to go to my sons.  Upon the death or remarriage of my wife, my executors are to sell all real estate in Flushing or elsewhere.  From the proceeds oe10 are to be paid to each of my sons, Obadiah: Joseph; and John, and the rest for the use of my daughters, Sarah, wife of Benjamin Lawrence; Anne Powers; and Mary, wife of William Marsh.  I make my sons Obadiah and Joseph and my friend and kinsman, John Willett, Esq., executors.”  Wit: Peter Huff, F. THE DR. JOSEPH HINCHMAN FAMILY

4.  DR. JOSEPH HINCHMAN:   s/o Thomas and Merriam Hinchman

b ca 1703 Flushing, Queens Co., NY, d bef 1-1-1745 Flushing, Queens Co., NY

            mar Mary Bloodgood (ca 1725-1744)

d/o William and Mary Bloodgood of Jamaica, Long Island

The History of Morris County:[6]  “Joseph Hinchman, the first of that name of whom we have knowledge, had sons Joseph, James and William.  Joseph was surgeon and James surgeon’s mate of an English ship of war during hostilities with the French in 1757. “

Will of Joseph Hinchman:[7] dated 12-5-1744, proved 1-1-1744/45. “I, Joseph Hinchman, of Flushing, surgeon, being sick and weak, and being desirous to settle my estate in such manner that no controversies shall arise.  I leave to my wife Mary my negroes “Will” and “Bess,” also a riding mare and a woman’s saddle, and two beds with furniture, 4 cows, a large copper kettle, 6 pewter platters and 12 plates, 2 iron pots, my best pair of andirons, a tea kettle and 7 silver spoons.  I leave to my son Joseph all my wearing apparell and all my books and instruments of chirurgery.  To my daughters Mary and Sarah each a negro girl when they are 18 years old.  I leave to my executors all my lands, meadows, and dwelling house, with all appurtenances, to be sold, and after payment of debts and funeral charges, 1/8 of the proceeds to my wife, and the rest to my children, Joseph; William; Robert; James; John; Mary; and Sarah.  To be paid to my sons when 21 and to my daughters when 18.  I make my wife and my brother-in-law, William Bloodgood, executors.” Wit: Bernardus Ryder, William Field, Benjamin Hinchman.

Several stories involve the sons of Dr. Joseph and Mary Bloodgood Hinchman.  The first is the journal written by Dr. Joseph Hinchman relating his experience as Surgeon and his brother as Surgeon’s Mate on board the Prince George during the French and Indian War.  [See Dr. Joseph 5 Family].

The second account involves Dr. Robert Hinchman and is written in Wayland Jefferson’s Cutchogue – Southold’s First Colony as follows:  “Robert Hinchman espoused Anna Wickham, June 13, 1756.  He had followed the sea and during one of his voyages he formed a friendship with Capt. David Landon … He came to Southold on young Landon’s invitation and during his visit prescribed a treatment for pneumonia that has become legendary.  Major Silas Horton … was stricken with a “pleurisie.”  His life was despaired of and Robert Hinchman suggested that (Horton) be wrapped in a blanket and dipped in the icy water of the bay.  Major Horton gave his consent, the experiment was tried, and much to the astonishment of that generation and perhaps this, Horton recovered.”
