Letters to the Editor
Three ring notebook for The Hinchman Family in America: I just pulled the comb binder off my book, cut off the edge, and punched holes in the side, then filed all the pages into a 3 ring notebook. I even slid the cover down into the clear plastic pocket on both the front and back! It is what another nationwide group (TOPS) I belong to has had to do to keep up with updates. …
This has kept the cost far lower than it had been when they were sending out an updated page, and everyone seems to like working with our TOPS manuals in that way. For the Hinchman book that I just arranged like that, if I find something I want to keep right with that person’s page, I can just punch holes and tuck it in between! … I have been out taking photos of the Rush Co Hinchman’s that moved to Tacoma Washington and will let Shannon know about the gravesites, dates, etc. Thank you for all you do… Gayle Hinchman Dorman
Martin Hinchman – My genealogy – still trying: I am taking this research up again after a number of years off to handle other aspects of life. Problem is still the same – I can’t get info about the parents of my ancestor Martin Hinchman, who was born about 1808 or 09 and was married in Corning, New York to Hannah McDaniels. I know nothing else and would like to know who his parents may have been so I can continue the research. I am trying to find out where my branch of the family, which comes from Oswego Illinois, relates to the rest of the Hinchman tree. Mike Hinchman
Oliver Hinchman: Indeed Oliver Hinchman WAS the father of Azariah Martin Hinchman and Elizabeth Hinchman. It appears that Elizabeth Hinchman was born in Sussex County NJ but I am not sure about Azariah Martin Hinchman. Elizabeth Hinchman married Gideon M. DeWitt and someone has done a bunch of research on the DeWitt family. Here is what we (my wife Bessie is a really good researcher) found on Oliver. He was the oldest child of John Hinchman and here is the lineup (this came from http://web.mac.com/rogergilbert/GRG%20Ahnentafel/at01/at01_012.htm), Mike Hinchman
Genealogy Software and Pictures of Ancestors: I am overwhelmed. This started out to be what I thought would be a simple project but has turned out to be much more involved. And rightfully so I might add, since we are dealing with life’s events of people. I never in a million years thought this would become so complex.
Anyway, it looks like I need some kind of genealogy software to get it all organized properly and keep it together. This would also help me make charts and graphs and perhaps share information with others who might make use of it.
At present I have downloaded and installed something called GRAMPS. It has extensive documentation but no tutorial which is what I need to get started. The software looks like it would do a good job but I just don’t know how to get started or to answer some of the questions it asks.
Can you recommend anyone who would be willing to work with me on this? I can send screen shots when needed as I am quite a knowledgeable computer user. Alternatively, is there some other software I should use for this?
Also, Bessie wants to know if there are any pictures that we could somehow copy or scan of any of these folks? Mike Hinchman
Editor’s Note: Mike, Try searching www.findagrave.com for pictures, obits, and links to others.
Editor’s Note: Mike has now connected his family to Dr. John Hinchman of New Jersey.
Indiana Hinchmans: Hi there Mary, Just a few notes to say hello to all the Hinchman’s and all their families. It’s been a long time since we have seen any of the Hinchman’s. Hope everyone is healthy and well. Love to you all. Helen L. Morris
Carl Hinchman: My name is Cynthia L. Hinchman – Lyons, and I am interested in locating the Hinchman’s in America book. My grandparents were Carl and Dulcie Hinchman of Cabell County WV. Any guidance that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Cynthia Lyons
Editor’s Note: Information about Carl Hinchman and others in The Hinchman Family in America book can be found at www.rootsweb.com . This file is listed as hhs.
Hiram Hinchman: I got a few issues of the Chronicles back in ’07. I had submitted photos of my great-great-great grandfather Hiram Hinchman and his wife and it was included in the fall of 2007 issue. My husband got very, very ill, and passed away at age 63 in late “07, and it has taken me quite a while to get my life back in some semblance of order. Now I would like to join but need an application, and am also trying to find out if you have old copies of back issues. I cannot find my very favorite story, when a relative (not positive who it was right now) went to W Virginia and found the graves of our most distant Hinchman relative. I remember it brought a few tears, and made me want to go there, too. Gayle Hinchman Dorman
Viola Hinchman, d/o Clinton Starns Hinchman: My maternal grandmother was Viola Hinchman, daughter of Clinton Starns Hinchman and Alice Cary Felton. I was just made aware of your website by a cousin, Corson T. Stephens, III and found it interesting. I see the Conference in 2010 is in WV but it doesn’t show a date…when and where is it being held, I’d like to try to attend. Scott Henry Miller
Viola Hinchman: Thanks for your return email. My grandparents, Viola Hinchman and husband Corson Taggert Stephens, had 3 children…my mother Mary Helen (Stephens) Miller, Corson Taggert Stephens, Jr., and Catherine (Stephens) Wanner. I can send you our information to help to update your records. I’ll let a cousin from each of the other siblings know of your interest and have them send their information.
I would love to attend one of the Hinchman meetings but unless it is near Lancaster PA on the 3rd weekend in June, I won’t be able to attend. I’ve been attending a Miller Reunion that same weekend for the past 54 years and haven’t missed one yet…so you’ll understand why I cannot attend.
I have a question regarding your death information…are you recording where the individual actually died or where they were living at the time of the death? I see you don’t have that information for Viola but I can probably find that. Your cousin somewhere down the line… Scott Miller
Harriet and William Moler: You have a very interesting site. I am doing genealogy on the Moler/Mohler family. In the 1850 census, Rush, Indiana, there are two children living with Andrew and Mary.
Do you know who these children are? Harriet Moler is 15 and William is 12. My husband’s family changed their name from Moler to Mohler about 1880. Our William Moler m Mary Ann Black (1860 census Madison,In.) were my husbands’s GGGrandparents. I am wondering if this Willliam is our William. Our William died in the Civil War. Did William and Harriets parent’s die and Andrew and Mary take them in? Thanks for your help. Lois and Ray Mohler
The Hinchman Family in America: I am interested in the book Hinchmans in America. Please email info to me asap. Thanks. Joan Kaighn
Welcome in Berkeley Springs: Hi Mary & Joe, we finally made it back. So very much thanks to you both, & everyone who was there. You all made us feel so at ease & welcome. I feel so blessed to have had the chance to meet all who were there. God willing, hopefully, we will be able to see everyone next year. Pamela Hinchman Skinner
Maybe next year: I enjoyed the photos. I missed seeing and visiting with all of you this year. Maybe next year. Barbara Hinchman
Berkeley Springs Conference – John Henry Hinchman, MD: We certainly enjoyed meeting all you “cousins” at the Berkeley Springs Conference. I am sending some of the pictures I took at the conference. I also added pics of John Henry Hinchman, M.D. and his wife “Molly.” (my Great-grandparents) and my Grandfather, John Doherty Hinchman, M.D. with his siblings, Erina, Harry, and Stuart Hinchman. Harry and Stuart are dressed as “girls with the curls.” I was told that they were anything but effeminate but were stuck in the style of the day. Their brother, Ernest Hinchman, M.D. was not yet born. I think my grandfather was about 12 in the picture so it was taken about 1895. Thank you so much for including us in the HHS Conference and please keep in touch. Jim and Bonnie Savage
Daniel Henchman: My name is Janice Johnson and I live in MT. I have been working on the Merritt family, and know that Zoa Merritt married Daniel Henchman in St. Paul in 1890. I noticed you have those two on your site. Would you happen to have a photo of Daniel or Zoa? Thanks so much, if you are able to help, and if you would like a bit more info on Zoa, I do have a bit. Zoa’s deathdate was 1905. She was born Sept 1856 in Red Wing, MN. She was the daughter of Daniel S. Merritt and Mary A. Millard Merritt. Marguerite Henchman, daughter of Daniel and Ednah, died Dec. 22, 2001, Mankato, MN. This may help you fill in a few blanks! Thanks for the reply- Janice Johnson
