President’s Message Dear Cousins,
Thank you to Cheri Hinchman Widzowski for all your efforts for the 2008 Hinchman Heritage Society conference in Exton,
Pennsylvania. Your choices of various restaurants for group dining were great.
The annual banquet at The Inn at Chester Springs was delicious. Also, thank you and Dan for the
wonderful hospitality and delicious food at your home. The editor of
the family newsletter – The Chronicle is always looking for items for the newsletter. Thank
you to Sharon Cornell for family history and photos, to Tim Cutler for the article about Dr. Joseph Hinchman, to Marilyn Chamberlain
for the note about the “Find-A-Grave” website on the Internet; and to Vera Salmons for the
newspaper article about the Robert Hinchman New Works Festival at Marshall University. Letters, as well
as articles, photos, news paper clippings, obituaries, etc are always needed for the newsletters. Mary
and I extend our sympathy to Jim Savage on the recent passing of his mother Noel Hinchman Savage.

Dr. Joseph Hinchman Submitted by Tim Cutler, Morristown, NJ, I am still working on the Dr. Joseph Hinchman story. I can't recall how much of it I have already shared
with you, so if I am repeating myself, I apologize.
First, I have confirmed that the brig Prince George, Capt.
Murry, was issued a letter of marque in 1757, and headed south accompanied by the brig King of Prussia. This expedition was
very unusual, as the largest navy ever assembled in North America set sail to attack Louisbourg a week later. I am still trying
to find out what made these two ships eligible for privateer duty instead of sailing from New York with everyone else.
Second, I visited the island of Hispaniola and learned a lot more about the Silver Bank - the reef which the Prince
George struck.
Third, I have gone through dozens of books about treasure salvage, and found that Jacques Cousteau
- before he was famous - was looking for the Spanish galleon "Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion" on the Silver Bank
in 1965. This was the ship that William Phips successfully salvaged in the 1660s, and which earned him the governorship of
Massachusetts. From the description of the ship which he found, which was clearly not the Concepcion, I believe he hit the
Prince George. The Cousteau Institute tells me that all the logs and artifacts are locked in a warehouse in France. They have
been very unhelpful. The key link is that Cousteau reported finding 14 cannons, the same number as listed on the letter of
marque, and some objects which are consistent with an 18th century privateer, including a weight with a 1757 date.
Fourth, I have been unable to locate Dr. Hinchman's log, which was in the possession of a Mrs. Noble when it was published in the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography in about 1916. She was from Morristown and had
two children. I have some good leads, but have
not followed up on them.
Fifth, I have had some long chats with celebrity treasure hunter Sir Bob Marx. He used
to write articles for barber shop-type magazines, but is our country's best-known treasure guy. We're having dinner
next week in Florida, and I'll lay out my notes and maps, and he will tell me how to prioritize the missing pieces.
Sixth, the end result of this project will be a book entitled "Privateering in the French and Indian War," which I will publish later this year. Most of the narrative is done, and the tables of ships, captains and crew are pretty
much finished. I still need Connecticut and Maryland data, as well as an overview summary and conclusion. When this book is
done, members of the Hinchman Family Association should be able to qualify for membership in the Society of Colonial Wars.
I have just returned from a week of diving at Old Providence Island - a remote and long-forgotten island off the coast
of Nicaragua. It was the site of a Puritan settlement in the 1630s, but was not successful. However, Governor Lewis Morris'
father and uncle were among the original settlers, so the island has a direct link to New Jersey, Morris County and Morristown.
More later, but I wanted you and the HHS to know that I have made a lot of progress in this project, and that I am grateful
for your interest and assistance.
Best regards - Tim Cutler Morristown, NJ *******************************************************************************************************

Not Attend This Year: 5-16-2008 - Cousins, I will not be able to make
it to the HHS&L gathering this June. My brother's youngest daughter is getting married the first weekend in June.
Knowing that, I took a different part-time job from the one I had the last couple of years. I had
it all planned I would go to the wedding the first weekend and still be able to join you guys latter in the month. As it turned
out, one of my hunting buddies is going to get married that weekend and I am going to be an usher at the wedding.. Please
keep sending any Hinchman news. If you have any good (or really bad) e-mail jokes send them as it means that you are thinking
of me. Ken Hinchman, hangman3872@excite.com Lexington,
KY - 2009: 5-17-2008 - We will not be going
to the reunion this year. There was a fire next door and the house burned to the ground. Our home received some
damage and we will be busy working on the repairs. Hope you all have a great reunion and we will see you next year.
Ted and Pat Hinchman, phinchman@suddenlink.net Berkeley Springs, WV – 2010: 5-27-2008 - Unfortunately, we will be unable to attend the meeting this year but intend to attend
the one in Berkley Springs, WV. I have misplaced my newsletter so I need the dates and particulars. I just spoke
to my daughter, Elizabeth in Fairmont WV and she and her family would like to attend also. She and her husband, Matt
Hokom, are professors at Fairmont State University. I know we have ample time and you will be sending information on
that Family meeting. I will do some Hinchman family updating and will send it to you. Thank you, Jim
and Bonnie Savage (James John Hinchman Savage) quite a mouthful! jjsasv@comcast.net Ayers Hazelton
Hinchman: 4-17-2008 - My name is Katie Hinchman
Knickman and I live in Omaha, Ne. My father was Ayers Hazelton Hinchman born in Horton, Ks. He has been deceased since 1985.
I have started working on our family history and am interested to know what happens at your conferences. Is there a time and
place where information about the family is shared? Where you might see other family trees? Do the side trips include places
like the local libraries which might have additional information regarding the family history or is this just a family reunion
type setting where we just get together to eat and socialize. I am really very interested in visiting some sights that might
be related to our past heritage, ie. cemeteries, family homes, genealogical societies, etc. I know my grandfather was from
a large family in Kansas - 9 children. Perhaps I should start there first and work backward. Any help would be
appreciated. Thank you. Katie Knickman, JoKaKnick11@cox.net William
Hazelton: 4-18-2008 - The only information I have ever heard was
that William Hazelton was born in New Jersey not far from a Hazelton, Pennsylvania. This is not the Hazelton that is
on the maps today. This was a town named by relatives of his mother Beulah Hazelton Hinchman. Our family has continued
and still does carry the Hazelton name as a middle name. For some reason, I think the town might
have been taken over by Philadelphia but I really don't have anything that proves it. I think it is something
I have heard. James & Beulah were married in Gloucester, NJ. November 16, 1809 and William born 1815. I found
an 1830 US Fed Census with the name of James but no names - only shows two males five & under, two males 10-15 and 1 male
40 - 50. The females were 1 15-20 and 1 40-50. The ages would be approx. right for James, Beulah and William.
As you can see, I have lots of loose ends. I really appreciate your help. Thanks. Katie
Knickman, JoKaKnick11@cox.net William
Hinchman: 4-19-2008 - Oh my gosh, thank you. I have never been able to go beyond James & Beulah.
I suspected that William had a brother named James as that name showed up on one of the census reports and the age would have
been right for a brother because he was too old to be a child of Williams. I can't begin to tell you how much it
means to me to have your help. I have tried off and on for several years to find info and always came up with a dead
end. Katie Katie Knickman,
JoKaKnick11@cox.net Glenn Hinchman: Glenn Hinchman, 93, of
Athens, passed away Fridy, May 30, 2008 at Mercy Pavilion. He was born October 18, 1914 in Three Oaks,
Michigan, the son of Howard and Bertha (Bean) Hinchman. Glenn had worked for Wood and Woodruff for several
years and later retired from the Athens Area Schools where he had worked for many years. On February 9,
1939 Glenn married Mildred Lucille (Hosmer) in Bryan, Ohio and she preceded him in death on February 22, 2008.
He was also preceeded by his son; James; two brothers Arthur and Harold; and three sisters Margaret, Cora and Ruth.
Surviving are two children Charles (Elizabeth) Hinchman and Jean (Donald) Butcher; daughter-in-law Shirleyanne J. Hinchman
and others. Private graveside services will be held at Burr Oak Cemetery, Athens. Legacy.com.

The Pictures: Sorry I couldn’t make the PA meeting but I really
enjoyed all the pictures. Will try for next year in Lexington. Norma S. Hinchman, rjhnsh@aol.com Robert Hinchman:
I am enclosing an article from the Herald –
Dispatch about the Robert Hinchman New Works Festival. It is their second. The way Robert’s
money was left to them it really couldn’t be used until Wavel died since she was to receive interest in a certain amount.
This was a dream of Robert’s to have
the drama dept. able to experiment with new works. Wavel and I attended a foundation meeting and dinner
and we were invited over the “play house” to attend a play. His picture is displayed in one
of the corridors. I must say we sneaked out during intermission. We weren’t into new works and experiments,
but I’m sure Robert would be very pleased. I have only been to the Swann Cemetery once since Robert died. I had hoped to get out
there this summer if I can get someone to go with me. Don had five daughters and they honored me on my
85th birthday at Red Lobster. I’m
sending you my check for dues. I’m always interested in hearing what everyone else is doing.
In Robert’s family there is only me, John R. McNamara and Connie Richardson. Anyhow, I’m
still alive! I’m in fairly good health – I’ve had both knees replaced, but other than
a few “old age” ailments, I’m pretty good. Vera Salmons New Works Festival, by Dave

Noel was born in Richmond on Christmas Day, 1920. She was a graduate of St. Gertrude's High School and Westhampton
College. After teaching for a year in the Richmond Public School system, she began working for the Federal Government and
held various positions in Virginia, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. She worked for the Social Security Administration
for many years before retiring in 1983 as a Field Representative. Noel was a self-described "Rivah Rat" and
divided her time between her home in Richmond and her cottage in Mathews County. She entertained friends and family
at the Rivah for decades. She will be remembered for her generosity, quick wit, and love of dogs. The dogs of
the world have lost a good friend.

To and From the Editor
I want to see my heritage: 7-6-2007 – I am looking into my family tree… can you help?!? I just wanted to find
some pictures of my ancestors and see where we came from. I want to see my heritage. …
Let me get with my mom and get the dates. She does have a lot of information because she does a lot with
her family tree. I was curious what my ancestors looked like. Thanks again.

was Albert Hinchman and my grandfather was Sanford ( Truman ) Hinchman and my father is Wayne Hinchman. So according to your
email Albert's dad was John Hinchman? and John's wife was Sarah ? and then John's dad was William and mother Elizabeth
? Oh this can be so surreal ...... The Indianapolis gathering if and when I would love to come ....maybe Kentucky ? .... I
have 3 sons of my own now and I want them to be able to know things. Gidget Dickenson, dcknsn@uconline.com One

My same is Debbie married to Wayne Hinchman. We are presently in your book. My father-in-law
was John Simonson IV. One of our sons is John Simonson Hinchman V. Both of our sons
are now married and have sons of their own. I didn’t know about your website until our son, Jason,
received a newsletter to our address. We would like to be added to your newsletter. I
will mail the information and the funds required. Deb Hinchman, hinchman@ptd.net Lexington, KY - 2009: 5-8-2008

as I hoped. Will continue to look forward to your newsletters and next year’s meeting.
Dan Hinchman, DHinchman@aireco.com Can
Not Attend This Year: 5-16-2008 - Cousins, I will not be able to make
it to the HHS&L gathering this June.

Lavender - “Presented by Marshall University Theatre and Marshall University College of Fine Arts, the second annual
Robert Hinchman New Works Festival starts Thursday and runs through Saturday with both staged and unstaged readings of six
new plays.” The Herald-Dispatch, www.herald-dispatch.com,
submitted by Vera Johnson Salmons. Find-A-Grave: I
would like to encourage you to check out the resources at the virtual cemetery at http://www.findagrave.com <http://www.findagrave.com/>
You can check grave listings by state, county, surname, etc. There are more than 21 million entries. You
might find information on a bunch of your ancestors. This is also a great site for posting more detailed information
and photos on a particular ancestor than could fit on a traditional genealogy site. Marilyn Hutton, Corvid1@msn.com Noel
Hinchman Savage Savage, Noel Hinchman,87, of Richmond succumbed to injuries
suffered in a fall. She died peacefully on July 21, 2008 with her son and daughter-in-law at her side. She is
survived by her son, James J. Savage, and his wife, Bonnie, both of Midlothian; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Savage, and her
husband, Matthew Hokom, who live in Fairmont, WV; a grandson, John A. Savage, and his wife, Rhonda, who live in Gloucester,
Va.; four great-grandchildren, Madison, Abby, Ashton, and Oscar; and one niece, Martha V. Petersen of Oshkosh, WI.
