2009 Hinchman Heritage Society Annual Meeting

June 25-27

Four Points by Sheraton

Lexington, KY

Four Points by Sheraton is offering guest rooms at $89.00 for the nights of June 25-27, 2009.  The rate is extended for two nights prior to and after the conference for those interested in enjoying more time in the beautiful Bluegrass region of central Kentucky.  Group events with transportation are planned for Thursday evening, all day Friday, and all day Saturday.  Friday’s activities will include a bus / van tour of the horse farm country surrounding Lexington, as well as the city.  The annual business meeting will be followed by a luncheon at the world-famous Keeneland Racetrack.  You can locate your family on large Hinchman family trees displayed at that time.  A cook-out and lawn games [including corn toss] are planned for Saturday evening.

This year Family Tree Maker computer genealogical software will be offered to Hinchman Heritage Society members at one half the regular price.  Hinchman GEDCOM files will be available on CDs for a small price.  If you have additional information about your family that you would like to have included in this file, please email your family information to Mary Hinchman, mary.hinchman@hinchman.org.

It’s Time to Plan a Summer Vacation!

Hinchman Heritage Society Conference

June 18-21, 2008

The Inn at Chester Springs, Exton, PA

The upcoming 2008 HHS reunion/annual meeting will be held June 18-21 in Exton, PA, the heart of the picturesque Chester County countryside.  There’s something for everyone in this centrally-located area close to major transportation routes, shopping, historic, and scenic attractions.

Visit our “National Treasures” of old Philadelphia, Valley Forge, and Gettysburg.  Even Washington DC is an easy day trip for history-minded Hinchmans.  For those of you who live to shop, don’t miss the world-famous King of Prussia Mall – largest mall on the East Coast and 2nd only to the Mall of America in Minneapolis.  The TV shopping network, QVC, is based just a few minutes from Exton, and has both tours and shopping opportunities.  There’s also discount shopping at the well-known outlets in Reading and Lancaster – only an hour from Lancaster.

Also in Lancaster County are a number of attractions related to the Amish including an excellent interpretive center, working farms to visit, buggy rides, handmade Amish furniture and quilts, and delicious Smorgasbord or family-style restaurants.   In contrast to the old ways of the Amish, the city of Lancaster has a modern, chic and funky art-centered downtown area.

For those of you who enjoy amusement parks, there are several within a short drive of Exton, including Hershey Park, Sesame Place, and Dorney Park – complete with an extensive water park.  For sports fans, sports of all types from minor league to the majors can be found in Philadelphia and the surrounding cities, including Harrisburg, and nearby Wilmington DE and Trenton NJ.

Chester County, and the surrounding area, has an abundance of natural beauty found in numerous forests, farms, wineries, parks, gardens, and arboreta.  A number of state and county parks provide miles of hiking trails in a variety of terrain.   Our nation’s oldest zoo, The Philadelphia Zoo, has something for every animal lover.   Longwood Gardens, a former du Pont estate, is especially famed for its extensive gardens, fountains, and exhibits.  A sister du Pont estate, Winterthur, also has lovely gardens, including the critically acclaimed Enchanted Woods (primarily for children though it is well-loved by adults, too).  Winterthur is also internationally known as the premier museum for early Americana, especially for its furnishings.

Museum lovers will also want to visit any of the fantastic offerings found in Philadelphia, easily accessible by train.  These include one of the nation’s premier science museums, The Franklin Institute, named after Philadelphia’s most famous citizen and the extraordinary Philadelphia Museum of Art (complete with stairs made famous by another Philly citizen, Rocky Balboa).   Art lovers will also find the nearby Brandywine River Museum with its extensive Wyeth family collection (close to Longwood Gardens) and the Delaware Museum of Art (in Wilmington DE) definitely worth a visit.

As you can see from the above, there is an abundance of opportunities for fun in the Exton area, and these are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg – come and visit for yourself and have a great time in Pennsylvania!
